Looping movies in Riven X — sound encoding bites again

So, let’s start talking a little bit about the returns on investment (there has to be some, right?) from WWDC ‘06. Specifically, for the people following Riven X, the issue where looping movies with sound have this extremely annoying gap in the sound output when they loop.

For anyone keeping scores, you know Cyan seemed to have used, how to say, deficient audio encoders in Riven. Well, after chatting with some QuickTime engineers on Friday morning, we determined that the sound tracks in those movies are in fact too short, thus causing the gap during playback.

I had never previously considered that possibility, focussing instead on potential problems in my rendering code. After all, it was far more likely that I had screwed up rather than Cyan…

I haven’t done the DSP / analysis to determine if the track discrepancy is constant, proportional or random, but I suspect it will either be constant or related to the movie’s timescale (remember that QuickTime is not sample based but time based). Hopefully I should be able to address this issue sometime in October.

Hi, I recently dug up my Riven CDs and tried to run them on my MacBook Pro and thus I found this site. However, I can’t seem to get it to work. I read on in a previous message that I need to put Riven X in my Riven folder. However. I do not have a Riven folder anymore and can’t create one as the installer only runs in Classic. Also, I don’t have the Riven DVD, but rather the 5 CD set.

I tried to copy all the data stuff from disk 1 to a folder and put Riven X there as well, but that didn’t work. Riven X only reports a fileNotFoundErr (-43) in the Console. Can you tell me what makes a valid Riven folder?

Thanks in advance and good luck with Riven X!

Arthur Langereis:

I know the error messages aren’t exactly the best at the moment.

Riven X requires Extras.MHK to be right next to it, and will look for data files in a Data folder next to it.

Hey! I, too, am trying to run Riven in OS X on my MacBook Pro. I’m very glad someone is attempting to make Riven work on OS X - keep up the good work! I’m looking forward to the next release :D

Hi, just another voice thanking you for this work on Riven X. When you release it I will buy a shareware license or what have you, and publicize it as much as I can (blogs, etc., some web properties I own). For the life of me I can’t understand why Ubisoft isn’t interested in resurrecting this title. It is like a work of great literature, in my view the only CD-ROM to attain that level.

THANK YOU!
