Riven X 0.5

March 15th, 2008

Update: Riven X 0.6 is now available.

Riven X 0.5 is now available. The most important new feature is the edition manager, which will allow owners of the CD edition as well as owners of the various DVD editions to use Riven X. It should be noted that optical disc swapping is not supported yet, which means that CD edition owners should do a full install for the time being. Other changes include performance improvements and a large amount of bug fixes.

Riven X’s edition manager

There is a number of outstanding issues in this version, namely one that will badly affect single-processor machines (see bug #70). I will try to remedy this in the early 0.6 builds, which will become available through Sparkle.

Riven X 0.6 will be a more interesting releasing focusing on missing engine features, such as transitions, cursors and so forth. For detailed information, see the 0.6 milestone page.

    Fantastic work! =)
However found out it crashes while you try to exit the cave link after you have taken the lift to the second island and go to the stone stairs. Made a ticket with crash log
    Using 0.6d

Thanks to the entire community for releasing such a great piece of software! Unfortunately, I have had problems at one point in the game where you’re at the crater lake with the pulp boiler. The valve in the middle of the lake is not responding at all. Is this happening to other people or is it just me? I am using the Original CD Edition and haven’t tried to reinstall the files from the disks yet.

That valve, and many other more complex puzzles, are not implemented yet. It is by far the more complex portion of Riven to re-implement and that work will take until 1.0 to be completed. Efforts will begin during the 0.6 milestone timeframe, with most of the work starting during the 0.7 milestone.

Ah, ok. I sincerely appreciate your time and effort that you and the community have put into this project. I miss having the old Classic MacOS on my laptop (since it’s a MBP, I can’t install it) and being able to run my favorite old Mac games.

Downloaded a few times, always with the same result; a format error in stuffit expander. doh!

    Dave D:
I just downloaded the file using Safari, Firefox, Camino and Opera and in all cases I got a valid zip file which the built-in Mac OS Z zip decompressor had no trouble decompressing. Maybe you should update StuffIt Expander, or switch to a different program to decompress zip archives?

Aha, it now accepts my Riven DVD. I was wondering what the problem there was. What exactly are the differences between 10th anniversary and original DVD? I seem to recall a 1.0.1 update for the original DVD version, does that have something to do with it?

  9. Jean-François Roy says:

Andrew: well, as far as Riven X is concerned, one has a disc named “RIVEN” and the other “Riven” :p Well, there’s also a small difference in where the files are on the disc.

  10. Andrew says:

Heh, okay. Do you know what the 1.0.1 update does? Does it make some fixes to the data files or just the program?

Would it be possible to make Riven X automatically detect what edition you’ve got?

  11. Jean-François Roy says:

Andrew: I don’t know what it does, but I doubt it touches the data files. Perhaps this is something I will investigate once Riven X is closer to release.

And certainly, automatic edition detection is something to consider.
