Riven X 0.7.3 is now available. It fixes an issue on Tiger where saved games would not be selectable in the open saved game dialog.
Download Riven X 0.7.3 (5.1 MB).

I have installed and am running Riven X on my new iMac. The specs are: 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB 1067 1067 MHz DDR3 with Mac OS X 10.5.6.
I am really happy about being able to play the game. About the only thing I can see that is not working are the .png files for the pointer. The pointer in the game is consistently the Mac mouse arrow pointer.
I am running Riven X in the Fullscreen Mode. All the files from the CD were copied into Applications/Riven folder on the hard drive. It runs fast!
I would like to run Riven X from the hard drive and know this is possible. I did Show Package Contents for Riven X and examined the possible .plist files I could modify. I have the CD version of Riven that came with only 1 CD. In the CD.plist file it references that Riven X should run from the Disc, e.g., Disc.
How do I get Riven X to run from the hard drive? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Jean-Francois:
Thanks for your response. I did the Option-Riven install. Turns out I have the original DVD Edition. After the install, I tested Riven X and it no longer requires that the DVD be in the DVD Drive.
I did not know that the game was not fully implemented. However, just to let you know I was playing Riven X in Fullscreen Mode and it worked great! I’ll be patient for the full release and pass on any information that might be helpful.
Keep up the good work! I, for one, am grateful to be able to play Riven on my iMac with Leopard.

Hi Jean-Francois,
Thank you for this awesome project! It’s very nice to be able to play this awesome game on newer computers.
Riven X looks and feels good: it is fast and snappy, and the UI is intuitive.
Installation of Riven took a bit longer than expected. I have the 5 CD version. Riven X wouldn’t recognise disc 1 at first, presumably because it was looking for a volume called Riven1 while disc 1 is in fact called RIVEN1. I had to work around this by creating a disk image myself, filling it with the contents of the CD, and have Riven X recognise that disk image during installation. But it took me a long while to figure out the proper way to create such a disk image: Disk Utility wouldn’t work when choosing “New Image From Device” or “New Image From Folder”. Anyway, I got everything working.
Here are some other things I noticed:
* Full-screen mode lacks the custom mouse cursors.
* In the Window menu, the two Toggle options don’t seem to do anything. It was not until I opened Preferences that I learned I need to restart Riven X for those options to take effect.
* Is it really necessary to present the user with a dialog asking for which version they have? I imagine you can simply ask user to insert disc 1 and detect yourself which version they have. Thanks again for this awesome project!
Martijn.

Hi,
Great idea for the project… I Installed 0.73 on Leopard 10.5.2, works fine but some scenes are all liney… such as the scene with the water creature (just after the first monorail on the little island). The movie is playing of the creature but everything else is liney. Looked through the bug tracker couldn’t see this specific issue, could it be the water issue someone talked about ?
Im running quicktime 7.4, maybe that’s why?
Thanks

Sorry Jean-François… I have done now:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/rivenx/+bug/363853 -
Good update, I can explore more areas.
Although I noticed this: On the small wooden area where you pull down a string, causing a metal bar to come down, you can’t pull the string, being unable to go to the Moiety Age. Also the water effects don’t work properly.
But still good job, keep up the good work -
You have done an amazing job! I’ve been looking for a way to play riven without installing it on my desktop windows machine! (which is unbelievably slow!)
I can’t wait for the full version to be released.
One thing I have noticed is that from the beginning of the game you are able to read all three books that you acquire throughout the game. Shouldn’t only one be available to you and you get the others later?
Anyway, thanks so much!
If this is any help I’m running it on Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.7 and I have installed it from the five disks I have.

I tried this and Riven isn’t working on my computer. All it comes up with is a black screen. How do you get it to work?
If you can help, I would greatly appreciate it because I love this game and would really like to be able to play it.
-
Thanks!
I’ll try to see if anything comes up. -
Um… It didn’t really help with any problems, it just told me about the problem….
-
Alright. Thanks though.

I also forgot to mention that both the hangman game in the schoolroom and the colored marble puzzle don’t work either. I also want to know, is it hard to do these bug fixes, or is it easy and it just takes long?

Alright.

Jean,
1. new to riven. have a 17 inch macbook pro running tiger.
2. wanted to say thanks for creating this forum and let you know that Riven.7.3 is running well on my computer. (not in fullscreen, however. but it seems that fullscreen is not a prioriity. nevertheless, wanted to let you know)
3. don’t really know too much about the capacities of .7.3, but wanted to let you know the following:
a. I can run the game from the dvd using the .7.3.
b. I can run saved games. But it seems that I have to have the DVD in my computer to do anything related to saved games.
c. everything seems to have installed correctly in app support library.I hate to ask this question, since you may have answered in it another context (but I have looked! so apologies ahead of time if I missed this information), but is it the case that I have to run the game (including saved games) from the DVD all the time?
Thanks again.
Best,

I ran into what appears to be a bug:
In jungle island when riding the cart, found at the bottom of the wooden fish elevator, at the end of the ride when it is switching mode to the new island [i.e., where you normally would put in a new disk] it states that g_Data.MHK cannot be found and suggest to reinstall.- it seemed that the install of the 5 cds went fine…
- though I cannot locate the files copied on my disk
- if reinstalling is it clearing out the old data? or duplicating?Other than that, with one crash while saving, [and the other known issues with puzzles] it was nice to see Riven run again after all these years…[wife and kids hunted down the 5 disk around the house, and next thing you know...Riven]
Thanks for sharing.
Peace
dAlen

nevermind about g_Data.MHK cant find…[found the folder the files were located and it was not there...tried to copy it from disk and got an error...disk was scratched at the very end and copied 99% of that one disk but couldnt copy all]
Should be thankful that rivenx even allows it to play instead of requiring every bit of material to be there – may not have access to one island, at least I get to mess around with Riven again. [to bad it computer cant copy the 99% of the file that works...wouldnt mind being able to access the island but missing whatever that scratched part was...suppose thats not how info works though.]
Peace

I’m having trouble getting anywhere with this.
I’m using a DVD of the 10th Anniversary Edition, and running RivenX 0.7.3. This is on a G4 Powerbook running Tiger 10.5.7 with 1GB RAM.
When I launched Riven X the first time I installed from the DVD, but when I actually launched the game the screen was black and the debug console only has the message about typing help for commands. When I actually type “help” I get the message “you’re on your own, sorry”.
Each subsequent time that I launch the game the same thing happens: black screen, and no debug info in the console.
Any ideas? Does my laptop not meet the hardware requirements?

Hi,
Just a quick question – I’ve loaded up Riven from the 5 cd’s and it will now run on my Intel 15″ MacBook Pro, with Leopard 10.5.7, however it will only play in a tiny screen. When I click on the green blob to expand to full I get a mish-mash of various things on the screen.
I appreciate this is work in progress, but should 0.73 do this – shall I wait for 0.8?
Keep up the great work on a great game. It’s appreciated. Thanks

I just wanted to thank you for the amazing effort you’re putting into this project. You’re making excellent progress, as nearly the entire game seems playable already. I’ve been waiting years for the opportunity to play one of my all-time favorite games once again, and this is without a doubt the best effort to port Riven to a modern OS that I’ve seen thus far. Please keep up the great work!

I installed the Original CD Edition, which indicates: “Installed fully on disk. Does not require optical media to play.”
However, when I start the game, and select “Play Riven”, the program responds with: “The Riven data file “t-Data.MHK” is unavailable. To re-install your Riven edition, relaunch Riven X while holding down the Option key.” I did exactly that, but there is no option to “re-install”.
1) Perhaps the data file did not copy correctly. Where is it stored?
2) How can I re-install the disks?I played it on PC, but never completed it!
Thanks for your efforts to help with re-playing a great game!(PS: I am using the UBISOFT Exlusive re-packaged 5 CD version)

This is so great! I’m definitely excite about release 1.0! Thank you for all your good work.

Just been playing the new release, and I’m impressed with how far it’s come. Of note, though; that grid thing that looks like a giant pinboard on Plateau Island doesn’t work, and when you see the woman in the white robe get away in the lower level of the island, the game crashes. As well, the colour wheel on the chair that you go onto on Plateau Island doesn’t show any of the colours besides blue, but I’m probably to blame for that; I forgot how that puzzle works. :S
-
First off, that isn’t a woman that you see in the red caves. It’s a scribe.
(Yeah, I know, it’s hard to tell)
And yes, the color wheel on the chair in the whark chamber doesn’t work…yet.
But the two things that are not working that are required to finish the game is the color grid in the giant gold dome. And the pull thingy at the gallows. (It takes you up to a cell where you explore to find the Rebel Age)
