Congratulations to Cyan Worlds for MYST on iPhone

I thought I should congratulate Cyan Worlds on a really good port of the original MYST to the iPhone. That they managed to accomplish this at all is pretty amazing, but they went beyond getting the game on there and really tried to adapt the control interface for the touch screen.

And according to numbers on the App Store, they are doing quite well, at number 10 overall in the US. Considering the game is a massive 727 MB, that’s quite an achievement.

And before you ask, no, I don’t have Riven X working on the phone… yet. There are a number of technical challenges standing in the way, most notably the sheer amount of assets in Riven and background movies (the phone may not be able to handle those at all). In any case, I am focused on finishing the desktop version first.

Speaking of which, I should have the first development release of the 0.8 series out shortly.

I bought the iPhone version of myst, and it really is well done. It’s pretty funny to think that when I was a kid our family’s computer struggled to play it, and now you can just carry it around with you.

Great news about the new release of Riven X too – keep up the great work!

John Bayley: please be aware that Riven X is still in development and that as such many puzzles do not work properly. I’m hoping to complete work on Riven X this summer.

I did the same thing as Chris. I just bought the Myst app 2 days ago and squandered the entire weekend, often playing close to an outlet so my ipod could recharge at the same time. I even dug out my original Myst notebook that came with the game when it was first released. I had so much fun playing again I immediately searched for an updated version of Riven and found a link to you. The problem is – I’m one of those mac people you see on the commercials – you know – “Hi, I’m an artist and I’m a mac”; in other words, “HI, I’m just smart enough to know what a computer idiot I am-where does the plug go again?” Needless to say everything on your site might as well be written in sanskrit – I understand maybe every 7th word, which, by the way, just makes me appreciate what you’re doing even more – (the equation is how much I desire the product divided by the amount of understanding I have about what it actually is. I can’t give you an exact number because again -artist, no math please – but it’s definitely up there. So my BIG question is: Can I use this for OS X Leopard? I know – this is a stupid question, hence the previous explanation of my idiocy. FYI: you CAN make fun of me in your answer. If it works I will still totally buy your whachamacallit to put in the place with the thing for the whatsit. Thanks for making this and thanks to anyone who answers this. Might as well ask – anybody know of something like this for Zoombinis games? Yes, I know they’re for ages 8 and above. I believe 30 is still above 8 ok?

Mena Murray: Riven X is still in development, and as such is not yet fully functional. I recommend you wait until the final version is released this summer. I am making early versions available to solicit feedback from the community and to find bugs and compatibility problems.

HI, know you’re busy but any idea when the next release is due? Can’t wait to start playing this properly again!
