I realize it’s been a little while since I communicated the status of Riven X, so here’s where things are at right now:

  • The game is fully implemented. Every puzzle works as does the inventory, all the endings are done, the i’s are dotted, the t’s crossed.
  • There is one missing feature from the original game: the flies special effect, seen in many cards on the village island. This will take at least 2 to 3 weeks to implement.
  • Many improvements have been made to the engine which should address some of the currently open bugs.

Once the flies special effect is done, Riven X 0.9 will go out and I will enter the 1.0 development cycle, which will aim at truly polishing the program, fixing as many bugs as possible, testing with a wider audience and preparing the release. I expect this process to take about a month.

So thank you all for your support, it won’t be too long now until you can get your hands on Riven X 1.0.

  1. Wow! Can’t wait. If you plan on charging for 1.0, I’ll pay. If not, do you accept donations?

  2. Thank you for your support! I will not be charging anything for Riven X, nor am I accepting donations, for legal reasons. Riven X is only a replacement engine for a game to which I do not own the copyright.

  3. Awesome! you rule.

  4. Thank you! This is a very cool project and I have enjoyed launching Riven to try out the previous releases.

  5. thank you thank you!

  6. I really appreciate the effort you put into this project. I’m enjoying this game, once again, thoroughly.

  7. I have a question, actually. If we have a saved game in Riven X .8, will it open up in the update? just curious.

  8. This is great work. Many, many thanks. Can’t wait to see the finished product.

  9. Inventory fixed, puzzles working, various bug fixes, and the complete version to be released soon………THAT’S AWESOME!!

    Keep up the good work!

  10. Excellent news- seems to run better on my mac than the original on my windows box as it is.
Well done and thank you for all your work on this, which is a huge showcase for your talents.

  11. Superb !!

    Sublime !!

    What a man !!!

    I can review my memory…

  12. Wow, I haven’t checked out Riven X in a while and now I see you implemented all the puzzles! Great work!

  13. Will 0.9 implement fullscreen?

  14. Thanks for all your hard work. We really appreciate it. :D

  15. Tito: Yup :)

Marshall: No, fullscreen will be in the final release. 0.9 is the “gameplay complete” release.

  16. The stone room is messed up. I got the sequence right, (fish, beetle, seal, frog, wharg) and nothing happened. Also, the stones would not reset, so I had to undo each of them in reverse sequence that I activated them.

  17. I listed them wrong. Oops. :) Okay, the stone room works, but the stones don’t reset when you get it wrong

  18. Charles: please file a bug on https://bugs.launchpad.net/rivenx with the exact sequence of action to take in the stone room that reproduces the “no reset” bug you describe. Make sure to mention which version of Riven X you were running as well as which Riven edition you were using.

  19. Really great news!
    Can’t wait :)

  20. Spiffy! This is great. I can’t wait for the 1.0 release!

  21. This is truly fantastic.
Sheepshaver can’t handle DVD’s, so I was hooped until I found out about this. Thanks so much.

Playing through on v0.8.3, the game seemed near perfect as-is, so I’m sure the final product will be nothing less.

It is kind of ironic though, how the one thing missing to beat the game is Catharine’s combination to the Star fissure! All joking aside, thanks a lot.

  22. Thank you, I`m just waiting till 1.0 to play riven :D

  23. Great, great news here. I’m so happy of this Riven rebirth. :D

  24. I’m very busy right now, so progress has been slow. However, I really only have one final feature left for the 0.9 release. I’m hoping for end of November. But again, this is a hobby project, so no commitments.
